Have you wondered how to make a pipe?
I took some pictures at most of the steps on a pipe I made early in 2006.
There are a few things I accidentally left out. Let's get started.
In this series, I'm going to rusticate
the pipe.
Part 4, Rustication Technique

This is where we left off. The pipe is ready to be rusticated.
The first thing I will do is sand off the wax on the rim and over the
stampings. I'll sand off the stamps and redo those as well.

I've gouged out the wood with a carving chisel (pictured). The pipe is
sitting on top of a kevlar glove that I wear so that I don't gouge out my
hand too.

This chisel is a standard 1/4 inch that you can get at any hardware store.
You can change the look of the rustication by altering the angle and the
pressure.

A #2 phillips head screwdriver can be altered to make a 4 pronged
rusticator.

When the rustication is finished, I use this wire and stiff bristly brush to
clean off all the bits of wood that are still clinging.

The pipe is stained and ready for
buffing.

This is the completed pipe.
I hope you've enjoyed the series!
